How To Make A Treasure Map For A Pirate Party

OldTreasureMapIf you are having a pirate theme party at your home this Halloween and you are looking for instructions on how to make an authentic looking pirate map to decorate your wall with, then you have come to the right place! This is such an easy project to do, and really adds to the atmosphere of your party.

Here are the items you will need…

  • White construction paper
  • Tea bags
  • Colored markers
  • Lighter (to char the edges of the map a little)
  • Large cookie sheet (or bathtub, if you are making an extra large pirate map)
  • Blow Dryer
  • Cooking Oil
  • Paper Towels

First of all, you are going to “age” the paper. If you are making a small size map then you will need a large cookie sheet filled with cold tea solution. If you are making an extra large size you will need to fill the bottom of a bathtub with some cold tea.

Dip the paper in the tea for about 5 minutes. Then flip and leave it in there for about 1 more minute. At this time, when the paper is wet and pliable, carefully tear and fray the edges a little, this helps to make it look more like an authentic pirate map.

PirateMapThen remove the paper from the tea and gently crumple it up a little and then lay it out more or less flat and allow it to dry.

If you are in a hurry, then you can speed up this process by using a blow dryer.

Blow dry on high for about 5 minutes (leave it lying flat to prevent it from tearing or breaking). When it’s mostly dry (and starts to lift up a bit) then switch the blow dryer to low setting to finish it off (about another 2 minutes).

When it is completely dry. then lightly char the edges with a lighter. This adds a really authentic touch. If you don’t feel comfortable using a lighter, then as an alternative you can use cinnamon powder. Just sprinkle a little over the torn edges and rub it in a bit. It will colour the wrinkles and torn edges more than the actual surface of the paper, and will also give it an old an authentic appearance.

Now it’s time to draw your map. Take some markers and just get creative. I have included on this page some pictures of finished pirate treasure maps to help give you some inspiration. Some suggestions to add are…landmarks like mountains, ponds, beaches, lakes, forests, palm trees. You could also add shark fins in the water, waterfalls, large rocks, jungles, caves, trees, rivers, and of course a compass rose and a big X to mark where the treasure is!

CompassPointNow wipe both sides with a small amount of cooking oil. Finally, blot off the excess with paper towels – this will make it will look and feel like genuine parchment!

That’s it, that’s all it takes to make a really authentic treasure map that you can be proud to display at your pirate party!

All you need to do now is decorate the rest of your home with other pirate decor like a Jolly Roger flag, gold coins, a treasure chest, etc and dress up as a pirate!

How To Make A Homemade Pirate Eye Patch

eyepatchAndBandanaThis is soooooooo easy to make and is a great finishing touch to your pirate girl costume. All you need is some black felt that you can get at your local fabric store or your local craft store and then a couple of shoe laces or a piece of elastic (black would be best).

First of all you need to draw on a piece of paper a shape that is your basic eye patch shape, you just have to approximate this, but it’s better to make it too big than too small, as you can easily make it smaller one once you have cut out the basic shape.

Use this piece of paper as your pattern and pin it onto a piece of black felt and cut out the patch.

Now you have your patch and all you have to do it to attach the shoelaces so you can tie it round your head. Just push one end of each of the shoelaces through the felt patch at each side of the patch and make a knot in it so that it won’t pull back through the felt when you try to put it on.

All you have to do now is to tie the ends snugly behind your head.

If you have chosen to use elastic, then just do the same as you would for the shoelaces to attach each of the ends of the elastic to the patch.

There you have it, an easy great finishing touch to your piratess Halloween costume!

Some Piratey Lingo To Use This Halloween!

If you are going to dress up as a pirate girl this Halloween, finish off the whole effect with some piratey lingo to go along with it!

I did some research and this is what I came up with .

standingskeleton

Ahoy – Hello there!

Matey - Generally friendly thing to call a person.

Hearty - More friendly than matey .

Avast Ye! – Get a load of this!

Grog - Watered-down rum.

Bilge - The unwanted water collecting in the bottom of your ship!

Belay - Stop it ( belay that ___ translates to cut that ____ out ).

Hempen halter – The noose!

Dance the Hempen Jig – To hang, (the noose was often made of hemp fibers)

Pieces of eight -silver coins.

Doubloon - gold coins.

All Hands Hoay! – All Hands on Deck! When everyone on the ship was called to the deck – usually for action.

Hornswaggle – To cheat or defraud someone.

Dungbie – rear end.

Freebooter Another name for a pirate.

Landlubber – ‘Lubber’ is an old English word for a big, slow, clumsy person, and this term was aimed at those persons onboard who were not very skilled or at ease with life at sea.

Picaroon This one s from the Spanish word for rascal, it was applied to pirates that was satirical or humorous.

Powder Monkey – A gunner’s assistant.

Be in Davy’s Grip: To be close to death, or frightened.

Have the Davies or the Joneseys: To be frightened.

See you to Davy Jones: To threaten to kill some one.

And then finally, the old favorite .….

Shiver me timbers! – Akin to “Blow me down!”, an expression of shock or disbelief, believed to come from the sound the ship made when ’shocked’ by running aground or hit by a cannon blast.

Add some of these pirate sayings to your conversation this Halloween and just watch your friends faces – you ll be the most original pirate girl at the party!
